Romanian 2,000 lei eclipse banknote collector values

The 2,000 lei banknote issued by the National Bank of Romania in 1999 to commemorate a total solar eclipse has become a notable item for collectors. Printed on polymer, it was one of the first such emissions in Europe. While the banknote is no longer legal tender and cannot be exchanged at the central bank, its value is determined by rarity, condition, and specific series.

For common, well-preserved specimens, market prices typically range between 16 and 30 lei. Uncirculated notes may reach approximately 30 lei, while those kept in the original BNR presentation folder can be listed for 49 to 50 lei. The 001A series is particularly sought after; uncirculated notes from this series with consecutive serial numbers can command higher prices, such as a set of seven consecutive notes listed for around 1,100 lei.

Although some individual listings on advertising platforms request sums as high as 3,000 lei, these figures represent asking prices rather than guaranteed market value. Interest in the note is often renewed during solar eclipse events, such as the partial eclipse visible from parts of Romania.
