Romanian commemorative banknote issuances
Overview
The National Bank of Romania (BNR) has issued and continues to manage commemorative polymer banknotes for collectors. An earlier 1999 banknote, issued to commemorate a total solar eclipse, has become a notable numismatic item. While no longer legal tender, its market value is driven by rarity and condition, with specific series such as the 001A commanding higher prices among collectors.
Building on this tradition, the BNR is launching a new numismatic issue on September 14, 2026, to honor the 190th anniversary of the birth of Eugeniu Carada, the founder of the institution. This release features a predominantly blue 100-lei banknote printed on a polymer substrate. The design incorporates a complex vertical transparent window with a multi-tone portrait, Spark security elements, the signature of Eugeniu Carada, an image of the Counters’ Hall from the National Bank’s Old Palace, and the Romanian coat of arms.
The issuance includes both the single 100-lei banknotes and special sheets containing four notes. Circulation for the commemorative banknotes is limited to 16,000 units, while the special sheets are limited to 1,000 sets. Online reservations for the collection are scheduled to begin on September 15, 2026, via the central bank’s website.
