Romanian airlines expand regional traffic as Wizz Air trims routes

AnimaWings, a 100 % Romanian carrier, says passenger traffic on regional airports has risen by more than 50 % in the past year. The airline now operates a fleet of seven Airbus A220‑300s from bases in Bucharest and Timișoara and expects a further 40 % increase in summer 2026, adding new regular flights from Cluj‑Napoca, Timișoara and Iași to destinations such as Athens, Thessaloniki, Crete and other European cities. It also announced the largest charter programme in its history, with flights from ten Romanian airports to holiday spots in Greece, Turkey, Egypt and Spain.

Low‑cost carrier Wizz Air is restructuring its Romanian network. From mid‑September 2026 it will drop five international routes from Timișoara – Prague, Berlin, Frankfurt‑Hahn, Nuremberg and Basel – and cut additional services from Craiova, Brașov, Bucharest and Sibiu. The airline cites market demand shifts and higher jet‑fuel costs, which have risen to $150‑200 per barrel. At the same time Wizz Air is adding seasonal routes such as Bucharest–Dubrovnik and expanding its presence in other Romanian airports with new destinations like Brindisi, Faro, Antalya and Berlin.
