Wizz Air network: expansion, restructuring and milestones
Overview
By mid-2026, Wizz Air underwent significant network restructuring, balancing aggressive expansion in some regions with strategic cuts in others. In Romania, the carrier marked its 20-year anniversary in July, highlighting a network of 14 airports and 41 stationed aircraft. However, the airline announced a major reorganization to optimize profitability, suspending several routes from Timișoara, Brașov, Craiova, and Bucharest, including services to Berlin, Prague, and Nuremberg. To offset these cuts, Wizz Air introduced new seasonal and year-round services, such as Bucharest–Dubrovnik and Oradea–Rome/Dortmund.
Globally, the airline achieved operational milestones, including a record 1,200 flights in a single day and high on-time performance rates. It also expanded its footprint in Spain by establishing permanent bases in Madrid and Valencia, creating over 150 jobs and launching numerous domestic and international routes. In Slovakia, the airline increased capacity significantly, while in Bulgaria, it added summer routes to Greek islands despite suspending the Plovdiv–Bratislava service for the winter.
Connectivity in Moldova has continued to grow through targeted expansions at Chișinău International Airport. Starting in late 2026, the airline scheduled new services to Brașov and Valencia, with the former and Valencia routes operating three times weekly. Additionally, Wizz Air introduced direct connections to London, Alicante, and Frankfurt. Further strengthening ties between Spain and Moldova, a new direct route between Alicante-Elche Airport and Chișinău was set to launch on October 25, operating four times per week.
Throughout this period, Wizz Air focused on technological integration, utilizing AI to support summer peak operations and introducing new digital passenger services. Meanwhile, the Romanian carrier AnimaWings also expanded its regional presence, launching new flights from Timișoara to Rotterdam and Copenhagen.
