Romanian police issue thousands of traffic fines in nationwide safety operations

Police forces across several Romanian counties carried out extensive road‑safety actions in August 2026. In Dorohoi, officers stopped more than 60 vehicles, issuing 28 fines and seizing a driver’s licence for drunken driving. In Pitești, local police conducted checks over two nights, handing out 17 fines to youths involved in a park altercation and targeting alcohol consumption in public spaces. The Mureș County traffic police reported over 25,000 contraventional sanctions during the first half of the year as part of the European ROADPOL‑SPEED operation, noting a drop in fatal accidents despite a rise in serious crashes. In Sibiu, a cascade‑type checkpoint on national roads DN1 and DN14 resulted in 133 fines, mainly for speeding, and the testing of 91 drivers for alcohol. These coordinated efforts aim to curb speeding, drunk driving and other violations, with total penalties amounting to tens of thousands of lei and the temporary suspension of licences and vehicle registrations.
