Romanian and Moldovan schools tackle overcrowding and upgrade labs

In Romania, many schools are operating beyond their designed capacity, with classes of 30‑35 students and specialised rooms repurposed for regular lessons. Officials are urged to assess space needs and consider options such as reorganising existing areas, constructing new building extensions, or deploying modular container classrooms that can be quickly installed and later relocated.

In Moldova, nine "model schools" have received renovations of 38 laboratories and mathematics classrooms, providing modern equipment—including microscopes, wireless sensors, and robotics kits—to about 7,000 pupils. The upgrades are funded by the European Union, UNDP, the World Bank and other partners, with further modernisation planned for additional schools such as the Ion Creangă High School.
