Romanian Archaeologists Unearth Three Millennia-Old Tombs in Andrieșeni, Iași

Archaeologists working in the commune of Andrieșeni, Iași County, uncovered three ancient funerary complexes dating from the late Bronze Age, early Iron Age (Hallstatt), and the medieval period. The site, situated in the Jijia River valley, includes a necropolis of five tumuli, three of which contain visible burial mounds.

Excavations carried out between 18 and 25 July 2026 employed non‑invasive techniques such as aerial surveys, magnetometry and geoelectrical measurements before limited invasive digging began on the central mound. The project is coordinated by Dr. Ciprian‑Cătălin Lazanu of the National Museum of History of Moldova and involves specialists from the museum, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University and the Iași County School Inspectorate. Dr. Lazanu noted that “these results obligă să extindem cercetarea” and plans annual campaigns, with a second excavation phase scheduled for September to explore the remaining tumuli and deepen understanding of prehistoric burial practices in the region.
