Archaeological discoveries in Romania

Archaeological excavations in Romania have revealed multiple significant historical sites across different regions and eras.

In Iași County, researchers in the Jijia River valley uncovered three funerary complexes spanning the late Bronze Age, early Iron Age, and the medieval period. The site includes a necropolis of five tumuli. Dr. Ciprian-Cătălin Lazanu, coordinating the project, stated that “these results obligă să extindem cercetarea” (these results oblige us to extend the research), with further excavations planned to study prehistoric burial practices.

In other areas, preventive research along the future Caransebeș–Lugoj railway route identified 23 sites. The most prominent is a Bronze Age cremation necropolis at Sacu, attributed to the Balta Sărată culture, containing over 500 prehistoric graves. Additionally, the ancient Dacian capital of Sarmizegetusa Regia has been highlighted for its civil, military, and cult constructions, which offer insight into Dacian royalty and the Daco-Roman wars.

Recent findings in Cârlomănești-Cetățuia, conducted by the Buzău County Museum and the Vasile Pârvan Institute of Archaeology, have uncovered Geto-Dacian artifacts from the first half of the 1st century BC. Under the rule of Burebista, this settlement functioned as a political, economic, and religious center. Notable discoveries include a treasure of 124 silver coins and a supply vessel fragment with a Greek inscription reading ‘the vessel of King B...’, suggesting the site may have been a royal residence.

In the Totești commune, the Cârnești site has provided evidence of Roman and medieval habitation. At the Mezeiniță point, remains of ceramics, bricks, and walls indicate the possible existence of a villa rustica. The area also contains a 15th–16th century medieval church, demonstrating long-term community continuity in the Hațeg region.
