Romanian Border Police Process Over 100,000 Travelers in 24 Hours

In the past 24 hours Romanian border police handled approximately 101,100 individuals—both Romanian nationals and foreign travelers—and more than 18,500 vehicles at the country’s external frontiers with Serbia, Moldova and Ukraine, as well as maritime and air entry points. Entry formalities were completed for 53,216 persons and 9,345 vehicles, including 15,479,716 Ukrainian citizens under a special regime that runs until August 2026.

Border officers performed over 14,900 checks using the eDAC electronic system, identifying 97 illegal acts (58 crimes and 39 contraventions). Fines totalling 15,900 lei were imposed and goods worth an undisclosed amount were confiscated. Starting 1 January 2025, internal border controls with Hungary and Bulgaria will be lifted for Schengen travel, though random checks may continue up to 30 km from the border.

The operation underscores Romania’s ongoing enforcement of national and EU border regulations amid high traffic volumes and the continued presence of Ukrainian migrants.
