Romanian border police seize illegal goods and flag multiple violations

Romanian border police reported a series of enforcement actions across the country. At the Moravița crossing on 17 July, officers discovered four protected primates hidden in an Ukrainian‑registered vehicle. The animals, lacking required CITES documentation, were handed over to the veterinary authority for care while an investigation continues.

In the past 24 hours, border checks processed over 120 000 travelers and 20 000 vehicles, uncovering 130 infractions and resulting in fines worth more than 43 000 lei and the seizure of goods valued at roughly 388 600 lei. Detailed statistics show that 55 000 persons entered Romania, including more than 15 million Ukrainian nationals since February 2022.

Separately, border officials in Sânnicolau Mare intercepted a Bulgarian driver transporting two German‑registered cars flagged for confiscation by German authorities, estimated at €57 000. In another incident, a facial‑recognition glitch in the EU Entry/Exit System briefly detained a British twin whose records mistakenly indicated an overstay in the Schengen area.

These operations illustrate heightened scrutiny of cross‑border traffic, illegal wildlife trade, stolen vehicle trafficking and digital monitoring challenges within Romania’s frontier controls.
