Romania & Moldova border activity & drug seizures July 2026
Entities: Sculeni border checkpoint · Romanian Border Police · Romania · Ukraine · Moldova
Overview
Romanian law‑enforcement continued an intensive July campaign. Border police operations remained a focus, with a micro‑bus stop near Râşeşti on 14 July that yielded a €150 k luxury sedan and a vehicle‑theft arrest in Galaţi. DIICOT executed 30 warrants against a pension‑fraud ring, seizing cash, euros, digital‑signature tokens and an air‑soft weapon. A raid on the Buricea organised‑crime group on 16 July placed 22 suspects in preventive detention and seized assets over €0.6 million.
On 20 July Romanian police in Satu Mare County arrested a 31‑year‑old suspect attempting to smuggle 38 kg of cannabis concealed in a van’s ceiling; a 30‑day preventive detention was ordered. Concurrently, Moldovan authorities in Soroca completed a six‑month investigation that culminated in a raid on an organised drug‑trafficking network, seizing marijuana, hashish, consumption devices and equipment, and detaining three suspects.
Border‑control activity intensified later in the month. Between 24‑26 July, border police recorded roughly 121,100 persons and more than 21,200 vehicles crossing from Serbia, Moldova and Ukraine. Electronic checks via the eDAC system identified 105 illegal acts (41 crimes, 64 contraventions), resulting in fines totalling 40,634 lei and the seizure of goods worth several million lei. Heavy outbound traffic was reported at the Sculeni crossing in Moldova, prompting officials to advise alternative routes.
These developments illustrate Romania’s heightened enforcement drive and the coordinated effort with Moldovan partners as both countries manage border pressures and organised‑crime threats ahead of full Schengen integration.
