Romanian cities expand free dog sterilisation programmes

The mayor of Victoria, Camelia Gligor, announced that the city's free sterilisation, micro‑chipping and dog census campaign will continue through 1 October 2026, after which owners who have not complied with legal requirements will face sanctions. The initiative, supported by local volunteers and veterinary teams, aims to reduce the number of stray dogs on the streets.

In Petroșani, mayor Tiberiu Iacob Ridzi approved a 30 000‑lei budget for a similar sterilisation drive covering both owned and stray dogs. The council emphasised that the public dog shelter does not practice euthanasia, making sterilisation the preferred humane solution to curb uncontrolled breeding and improve community safety.
