Romanian climatologist says heatwaves and storms will become the new normal

Climatologist Roxana Bojariu, head of the climate department at Romania's National Meteorological Administration, warned that extreme heatwaves followed by violent storms are becoming more frequent and intense as global warming progresses. She emphasized that "global warming and climate change mean the same thing" and that the phenomenon is already being experienced, not projected.

Bojariu explained that higher atmospheric water vapour fuels heavier rainfall and stronger thunderstorms, making them harder to manage. She urged both individuals and municipalities to adapt: improve early‑warning systems, increase urban greenery, add water‑features, and reduce concrete surfaces.

In related safety advice, experts warned that air‑conditioning units should be switched off during thunderstorms. Lightning‑induced surges can damage compressors, condensers, electronic boards and other components, leading to costly repairs. Homeowners are advised to cool spaces before a storm arrives and then power down the unit, disconnecting it from the mains if possible.
