Romanian Court Halts PNL Leadership Resolutions Amid Party‑Vote Dispute

On 3 July 2026 the Tribunal of Ilfov ruled to suspend two decisions adopted by the National Liberal Party (PNL) leadership, effectively pausing the party’s call for an Extraordinary Congress. The suspension follows a legal challenge by 16 liberal parliamentarians who demanded the court halt the National Extraordinary Council’s 19 June resolution to convene the congress on 21 June.

Eurodeputy Dan Motreanu warned that the court’s move could render a party’s constitutional status “optional”, while Senate President Mircea Abrudean stressed that parliamentary vote freedom is a constitutional principle that does not erase a party’s right to defend its identity and internal rules. Both politicians indicated that the PNL will appeal the rulings through all legal channels.

The Bucharest Tribunal also suspended the execution and effects of the same PNL council decision, underscoring the judiciary’s role in the internal dispute over party discipline and parliamentary independence.
