Romanian Court Suspends PNL Congress Decisions, Party Vows Appeal

The Bucharest Tribunal has provisionally suspended four decisions of the National Liberal Party’s (PNL) extraordinary congress held on 21 June 2026, as well as 17 subsequent resolutions of the party’s permanent bureau. The suspended acts include the election of a new party leadership and amendments to the party statute. The ruling is executory but not final; the court set a five‑day deadline for filing an appeal. Party president Ilie Bolojan said the party will respect the provisional order while preparing an appeal, adding that PNL’s activities will continue under the statute adopted at the July 2025 congress. The suspension follows a lawsuit filed by 18 liberal deputies and senators—including Hubert Thuma, Adrian Veștea, Lucian Bode and Alina Gorghiu—who contest the legitimacy of the congress decisions. Party officials described the judgment as an unprecedented attack on the party’s internal democracy, while dissenting members called it a warning signal and an opportunity to steer the party back on track. All parties involved intend to pursue all legal avenues until a definitive court decision is reached.
