Romanian cultural initiatives target diaspora in Italy and Spain

Multiple cultural initiatives are being launched to preserve Romanian identity and language among diaspora communities in Italy and Spain.

The “Poarta Basmelor” project, launched by the E Ceva Bine Association and funded by the Department for Romanians Abroad, focuses on Italy. The initiative includes an itinerant theater show and cultural mediation workshops designed to reconnect younger generations with Romanian heritage. The project aims to reach approximately 300 children and 300 adults in the Piedmont region between August and October 2026, addressing concerns regarding linguistic assimilation.

Simultaneously, the “Junimea peste Hotare” project, coordinated by the Cercul Junimii Association, is targeting communities in Spain and Italy. In Spain, the project includes a book donation to the Romanian Library at the Orthodox Parish in Madrid and a conference at the Romanian Cultural Institute to mark 145 years of diplomatic relations between Romania and Spain. In Italy, the University of Udine will host a conference regarding the social and economic role of the Romanian community, alongside book donations to local Orthodox parishes to support mother-tongue preservation.
