Romanian and Moldovan diaspora cultural preservation

Overview

Communities of the Moldovan and Romanian diaspora are implementing various initiatives to preserve their native language and cultural heritage in foreign countries.

In North America and Western Europe, Moldovan families are utilizing specialized schools and musical ensembles to teach children the Romanian language and traditional customs. In Southern Europe, projects such as ‘Poarta Basmelor’ and ‘Junimea peste Hotare’ target linguistic assimilation in Italy and Spain through theater, workshops, and book donations.

Efforts have recently expanded into the digital sphere to address the isolation of diaspora media. The Asociația Opera Scrisă. RO has launched the ‘European Network Romania Cultural’, a digital hub designed to connect Romanian-language cultural media outlets across Europe, including Spain, Italy, France, Germany, and Belgium. Funded by the Department for Romanians Abroad and implemented with the Western Branch of the Union of Professional Journalists in Romania, this initiative aims to support media entities facing challenges with cybersecurity and copyright protection. The network unites twelve media units, including eleven from the diaspora and Agenția de Carte.ro, providing them with a ‘European showcase’ and a professional copyright framework. Physical presentations of the project were scheduled for several Spanish cities, including Oviedo and Santander, between late September and early October 2026.

Cultural promotion has also expanded through musical performances. The third edition of the ‘Turnee de poveste’ (Story Tours) project, funded by the Department for Romanians Abroad and produced by Pro Contemporania, is promoting Romanian identity through a series of recitals. The tour includes performances by soprano Teodora Gheorghiu and pianist Diana Ionescu in Vienna, with subsequent scheduled appearances in Berlin, London, and Rome.
