Romanian electronic ID cards offered free of charge until June 2026

Romanian police inspectorates in the counties of Dolj and Cluj announced that the first electronic identity cards (CEI) will be issued free of charge to citizens aged 14 and over until 30 June 2026. The CEI, the size of a bank card, includes advanced security elements and biometric data (photo and two‑finger fingerprints) and can be used for modern digital services.

The card may be requested at any public community service office regardless of residence. Applicants must book an appointment online via the portal https://hub.mai.gov.ro, appear in person for the photograph and fingerprint capture, and can apply when the current ID expires, after a change of domicile, or in cases of loss, theft or damage. Authorities encourage early scheduling to avoid queues at the counters.
