Romania leads EU in diesel price surge, hitting record levels

Romania recorded the steepest weekly increase in diesel prices across the European Union, with the standard diesel reaching between 10.57 RON and 10.83 RON per litre – the highest level ever observed in the country. The rise, about 7.5 % in a single week, translates into an extra cost of up to 57 RON for a full tank, pressuring drivers and transport companies.

Prices vary by station: Petrom, OMV and Rompetrol report around 10.57 RON, while Lukoil stations exceed 10.80 RON. Analysts note that the jump cannot be explained solely by higher international oil quotations, which rose 11.86 % for Mediterranean diesel, and point to rapid transmission of price increases and slower reflection of any price drops.

The Romanian Parliament has approved a law allowing a dynamic diesel excise reduction of 5 %–25 % depending on market movements, but the decree awaits presidential promulgation. The Federation of Romanian Transport Operators (FORT) has called for an urgent review of how fuel prices were set over the past 20 days, arguing that lower Brent prices have not been passed on to consumers.

Neighbouring Moldova continues to sell diesel at roughly 32.5 RON per litre, markedly cheaper than Romanian rates. The situation has sparked public debate over the role of taxes and profit margins in the fuel market.
