Romanian Government approves 6.5% wage increase for Oil Terminal

The Romanian government has approved a 6.5% salary increase for employees of Oil Terminal, the operator of the largest oil terminal in the Port of Constanta. The decision follows threats of an indefinite general strike by the company's union, which had scheduled a two-hour warning strike for October 30.

An indefinite general strike starting November 18 could have significantly impacted national fuel supplies. Oil Terminal had previously warned that a total work stoppage could affect at least 50% of Romania's fuel supply by disrupting the transport and storage of petroleum products.

The wage hike is expected to cost approximately 10 million lei annually, which represents about two-thirds of the company's projected gross profit for 2026. Government spokesperson Dan Carbunaru justified the move by citing the strategic importance of the company and the need to avoid labor conflicts that could jeopardize oil imports and exports. The increase will be funded by the company's own resources and will not affect the budgeted profit for the current year.
