Romanian Government Approves 6,850 Health Staff Posts as Slatina Hospital Decries Low Allocation

The Romanian Government approved a memorandum on July 28, 2026 that unlocks 6,850.75 vacant positions in public health facilities, including 6,452 posts for hospitals funded by the National Health Insurance Fund and 398.75 for county ambulance services. The breakdown covers 2,593 medical assistants, 2,567 auxiliary staff, 1,433.75 doctors, and 257 pharmacists, biologists, biochemists and physicists.

The County Emergency Hospital in Slatina, which had requested about 130 new posts, received only 29 approvals. Local PSD leader Marius Oprescu criticised the decision, saying the allocation "is far below the real need and threatens patient access to care" and accused the process of partisan distribution. SANITAS Olt president Roxana Dumitrescu added that only four doctor positions were approved while 18 nursing and auxiliary posts remain insufficient, forcing staff to cover multiple wards.

Interim Health Minister Cseke Attila described the measure as a crucial step toward balancing human resources in the health system, while noting that further support for medical personnel is needed.
