European doctor shortage crisis deepens
Entities: Alexandru Rogobete · Marie Curie Hospital · Romanian Parliament · Constanța County Hospital · Vodafone Foundation
Overview
Across Europe, chronic physician and training shortages continue to strain health systems. In Slovenia, rain‑soaked queues in May highlighted primary‑care gaps, while Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium and Albania reported bottlenecks in training slots. Romania’s exodus of thousands of doctors prompted temporary tele‑medicine teams and modest staffing gains in July, yet hospitals remained critically understaffed, exemplified by Deva County’s limited obstetrics‑gynaecology coverage.
Late July saw a government memorandum to fill 22 nursing vacancies at Bucharest’s Marie Curie Children’s Hospital. Acting Health Minister Cseke Attila called the step necessary but insufficient, noting the persistent nationwide personnel deficit. The Sanitas doctors’ union described the hiring process as “cumbersome and bureaucratic” and urged an emergency amendment allowing public hospitals to hire without prior governmental approval.
In the following week the same memorandum was applied to the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Competitions for the 22 vacant nursing posts aim to reopen five NICU beds that were closed for lack of staff. Two newborns died while awaiting admission, adding to an estimated 150 child deaths on the hospital’s waiting list over six years. NICU chief Cătălin Cîrstovevan warned that more children will die unless systemic reforms are enacted. SANITAS and Sanitas reiterated calls for legislation to bypass the memorandum and announced a general health‑care workers’ strike for 28 July, protesting recent bed reductions and salary reforms, a dispute expected to affect hospitals nationwide.
