Romanian homeowners advised on garden practices to deter insects and spiders
Experts warn that common items left outdoors in Romanian gardens can attract insects such as beetles, mosquitoes and ants, which may later enter homes. Sources include stagnant water, organic waste like fallen leaves or food scraps, uncleaned grills, cardboard boxes that serve as breeding sites, and pet food left outside.
Spiders also thrive in undisturbed, damp areas that shelter insects. Recommendations include regularly removing leaf litter and plant debris, eliminating standing water, cleaning grills after use, storing firewood and other wood piles at least six metres from the house and keeping them dry, and disposing of cardboard boxes promptly. Reducing outdoor insect populations by using yellow or LED exterior lights, fixing leaks, and keeping the garden tidy further lowers spider presence. Implementing these steps can help prevent both insects and spiders from colonising the yard and moving indoors.
