Garden tick control guidance in Romania and Moldova
Entities: Lyme disease · Ticks · Romania · Entomologists · Moldova
Overview
In early July, Romanian health officials released advice focused on preventing tick infestations in private gardens, emphasizing lawn upkeep, short grass, removal of dense shade, physical barriers and, where needed, chemical treatments. A week later, the same experts broadened their recommendations to cover a wider range of garden pests, including beetles, mosquitoes, ants and spiders, adding measures such as eliminating standing water, cleaning grills, storing firewood away from houses, removing leaf litter, using yellow or LED exterior lights and fixing leaks.
By late July, health experts warned that ticks are now increasingly found not only in forests but also in gardens, parks and residential yards across Romania and neighboring Moldova. They highlighted the risk of serious tick‑borne diseases and advised that, in addition to regular yard maintenance (trimming grass, removing leaf litter and dense vegetation, avoiding wood or animal‑feed storage that attracts rodents), personal protection steps are essential. Recommended actions include using approved repellents, treating clothing with permethrin and applying targeted insecticide treatments only when necessary and by licensed professionals, extending the earlier garden‑focused guidance to a broader, cross‑border public‑health context.
