Romanian hospitals face safety and capacity challenges amid patient disappearance and ICU bed shortage

The Ploiești County Emergency Hospital reported that an 80‑year‑old patient, identified as N. A., arrived at the emergency department on 16 July 2026 in a state of mild confusion, later disappeared from the unit and was found dead in a nearby water channel. The hospital has launched an internal administrative investigation, increased medical staff and security personnel, and noted that several entrances to the emergency unit cannot be fully secured due to emergency‑services recommendations.

At the same time, the Iași County Emergency Hospital "Sfântul Spiridon" announced that all intensive‑care beds for severe burn patients are now occupied after receiving two critical cases transferred from other regions. Dr. Diana Cimpoeşu, coordinator of the SMURD‑Iași intensive‑care unit, said the hospital’s burn‑treatment capacity is limited and highlighted the need for additional specialized units across Romania.
