Romanian hospitals install smart ICU beds and prepare to reopen pediatric intensive care unit

The Neurology Clinic at Galaţi County Hospital has received eight new intensive‑care beds equipped with integrated scales, touch‑screen controls, alarm systems and anti‑slip mechanisms. The beds, part of the EU‑funded "Brain is a Priority" project worth roughly 13.5 million lei, aim to improve safety and comfort for stroke patients and streamline staff workflow.

Meanwhile, the Saint Mary Children’s Hospital in Iaşi is set to fully reopen its Intensive Care and Anesthesia unit after a year of reduced operation following a Serratia marcescens outbreak that caused seven child deaths. The unit now features stainless‑steel foot‑operated medical sinks, a reduced but re‑expanded capacity of 33 beds, and will undergo final disinfection before receiving ministry approval.

Both upgrades reflect Romania’s effort to modernise critical care facilities and address recent safety concerns.
