Romanian hospitals urge breastfeeding during World Breastfeeding Week

During the World Breastfeeding Week (1–7 August), medical teams at Maternitatea Buzău and the University Emergency Hospital in Bucharest highlighted the health benefits of exclusive breastfeeding. Dr. Silvia Cemurtan, chief neonatologist at Buzău, emphasized that breast milk provides all essential nutrients, protects newborns from infections, and strengthens the mother‑child bond. She urged mothers to seek professional support and reliable information.

At the Bucharest hospital, Dr. Monica Cîrstoiu, head of the Obstetrics‑Gynecology Clinic, reiterated that breast milk also supports neurological development and reduces long‑term risks such as obesity, diabetes and allergies. The hospital organised the “First Steps in Breastfeeding” event for pregnant women, new mothers, fathers and junior doctors, offering practical guidance and counseling.

Both institutions stressed that personalized medical counseling and encouragement are crucial for successful breastfeeding, especially in the early hours after birth.
