World Breastfeeding Week initiatives in Europe

During the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week (1‑7 August), health authorities in several Eastern European countries launched coordinated efforts to promote breastfeeding.

In Croatia and Slovenia, community‑focused events were held. The Zagreb‑East Health Center in Sesvete hosted a lecture on breastfeeding myths and emphasized societal support, while the Koper Health Unit in Slovenia issued detailed nutritional guidelines for lactating mothers, stressing balanced diets, hydration, and local foods.

A few days later, Romanian hospitals joined the campaign. Medical teams at Maternitatea Buzău and the University Emergency Hospital in Bucharest organized informational sessions for mothers, fathers and junior doctors, highlighting the nutritional, immunological and developmental advantages of exclusive breastfeeding and urging professional counseling.

Together, these activities illustrate a regional push, across both public‑health institutions and hospitals, to raise awareness of breastfeeding’s health benefits and to strengthen support systems for new mothers throughout the week.
