Romanian ID Card Travel Rules for 2026: Passport Required in Four European Countries

Starting in 2026 Romanian citizens will be able to enter the majority of European Union member states and a number of non‑EU countries using only a valid national identity card. The list of EU members where the ID card alone suffices includes Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Hungary. Outside the EU, the identity card is accepted for travel to Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and to several Balkan and Black‑Sea nations such as Albania, Andorra, Bosnia‑Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey. However, a passport remains mandatory for entry into four European states: the United Kingdom, Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. Travelers are advised to verify document validity periods and any additional visa or entry requirements before departure.
