AUR reaches 40% in poll, deepening Romania's political crisis

A recent IRES poll shows the far‑right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) at about 40% support, while the Social Democrats (PSD) are at 21%, the National Liberal Party (PNL) 17% and USR 10%. The surge has intensified Romania’s ongoing political deadlock.

PSD leaders have repeatedly ruled out any coalition with AUR. Victor Negrescu said, “I personally reject any government with AUR – it would bring a Hungarian‑style model, block EU funds and threaten democratic freedoms.” Sorin Grindeanu echoed a similar stance, adding that cooperation would clash with Romania’s commitments to the EU, NATO and the United States, though he did not fully exclude respecting voters’ will.

To break the stalemate, PSD vice‑president Negrescu presented three options: a new pro‑European government comprising centre‑right parties, a return to a rotation system for the premiership, or a technocratic cabinet. He warned that early elections would be undesirable for stability. President Nicușor Dan dismissed rumours of his suspension as “totally unserious” and warned that premature elections would prolong uncertainty.

Negotiations continue among the parties, with pressure on key ministerial appointments and on the formation of a stable majority. The outcome will determine whether Romania can secure EU funds and maintain its western strategic orientation.
