Romanian leu appreciates as euro and dollar rates shift
The Romanian leu has appreciated against major currencies due to a return in risk appetite. The euro fell over three sessions, moving from 5.2555 to 5.2536 lei, while the US dollar decreased from 4.5412 to 4.5266 lei.
In the local monetary market, the ROBOR index remained stagnant, with the three-month rate at 5.84%, the six-month at 5.92%, and the twelve-month at 5.98%. The Romanian Treasury sought to borrow 1 billion lei for March 2027, attracting over 961 million lei with an average annual interest rate of 6.06%. Additionally, a bond issue maturing in October 2026 saw high demand, with offers totaling 655.5 million lei against a planned 500 million lei.
Market participants are currently awaiting US labor market reports, which are expected to influence the Federal Reserve's upcoming monetary policy decisions scheduled for September 15–16.
