Romanian Liberal Party to hold internal elections after court annuls congress

The Bucharest Court has suspended the decisions of the National Liberal Party (PNL) congress that elected a new leadership and expelled five members, effectively reverting the party to its pre‑congress structure pending a final ruling. In response, interim PNL Bistrița‑Năsăud president and party secretary‑general Robert Sighiartău announced that internal elections will be organized from the grassroots up, with a focus on loyalty to the party and delivering results for citizens. The party aims to restructure its county and municipal branches, targeting key positions such as the mayoralty of Bistrița, and to avoid repeating past mistakes while preparing for upcoming elections.

Legal experts note that while the court’s suspension is provisional, the legitimacy of the congress’s outcomes remains in question, and the final decision could determine whether the newly appointed leaders retain their roles or the party returns entirely to its former executive board.
