Romanian migrants' economic impact contrasts with UK public perception

Research highlights a significant disconnect between public perception and the economic reality of the Romanian community in the United Kingdom. Despite being identified as the most economically active and highly educated European migrant group in England and Wales, a recent YouGov poll indicates that Romanians are the least-wanted European immigrants in the UK.

Data from the Office for National Statistics and HMRC suggest that approximately 1.3 million Romanians reside in the UK. About one-third hold university degrees, and their average salary is approaching the UK national average. The community provides critical support to the economy, representing 6% of the national construction workforce and playing a significant role within NHS England.

The disparity between reality and perception is attributed to historical narratives and media portrayals. Scholars note that long-standing Western European views of Eastern Europe as a “dark twin” have persisted, alongside lingering associations with the Ceaușescu dictatorship and post-communist imagery. Previous media campaigns and political rhetoric have also contributed to these social barriers.
