Romanian migration trends and diaspora impact

Overview

The Romanian diaspora, which exceeds 5.1 million people, continues to exert significant economic and social influence. While migration is driven by the pursuit of higher wages, recent data highlights a growing tension between financial gains and social costs.

Economically, remittances have reached a historic milestone. In 2025, Romanian workers abroad sent home over 7 billion euros, surpassing that threshold for the first time, according to National Bank of Romania data. Since the mid-2010s, total remittances have approached 60 billion euros.

However, this migration has created substantial challenges for child welfare. Data from the National Authority for the Protection of Children's Rights and Adoption shows that at the end of 2025, 50,364 children were recorded in social assistance files due to parental migration. This includes over 7,400 children with both parents working abroad and more than 37,000 with one parent away.

A survey by Save the Children indicates the emotional toll on these minors, noting that 58% of these children wish for their parents to return home, while one in three reports feeling treated differently at school. Consequently, psychologists suggest that ‘reverse migration’ is becoming an increasingly relevant concept as families balance economic benefits against the developmental needs of children and the complexities of reintegrating into Romanian society.
