The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania (MAE) has issued travel warnings for Romanian citizens travelling to Spain and Greece because a heat wave is expected to keep fire‑risk at extreme levels at least until 2 August 2026. In Spain the warning covers the south‑west river valleys, the Ebro Valley, north‑east depressions, the Pyrenees and the Canary Islands, where strong winds and low humidity will worsen conditions. In Greece the high‑risk zones include Attica, the Peloponnese, Central Greece, the North Aegean islands, the Cyclades and Crete. MAE advises strict compliance with local authority instructions, evacuation orders and traffic restrictions, and recommends using the free travel‑app “Călătorește informat”. Consular assistance can be obtained through Romanian embassies and consulates in the affected countries.

Across the wider region wildfires have already devastated parts of Spain, Portugal and France, burning more than 170 000 hectares this season and forcing the evacuation of thousands of people. In France, about 42 000 hectares have burned, destroying over 240 homes and prompting the evacuation of roughly 220 000 residents. Two Greek firefighters died on Crete while combating the blazes.
