Romanian motorway construction advances with new tunnels and junctions

Major infrastructure projects are advancing in Romania as construction continues on the Sibiu-Pitești and Sibiu-Făgăraș motorways. On the Sibiu-Pitești motorway, Turkish contractors Mapa – Cengiz are preparing to begin work on the Boița 2 tunnel, which will be 444 meters long. This marks the fourth of seven planned tunnels on the Boița – Cornetu section. Other ongoing tunnel works include the Balota and Robești tunnels.

Construction on the Sibiu-Făgăraș motorway has also commenced on the Boița–Avrig section. This segment features a complex multi-level road junction at Boița designed to connect the A1, A13, and DN 7 highways. The project involves significant engineering challenges, including the construction of 23 bridges and viaducts, as well as managing soil instability issues near the Olt Defile.

Despite the progress, the Sibiu-Pitești project faces delays related to environmental procedures. CNAIR has submitted documentation to revise environmental agreements for the mountain sections, and contractors are currently limited to working on areas where construction permits have already been issued.
