Romanian mountain rescuers conduct multiple emergency missions amid surge in calls

On 25 July 2026, the Salvamont‑Salvaspeo Dâmbovița team carried out three rescue operations that required SMURD helicopter support. The missions involved providing first aid to a 45‑year‑old woman suffering from suspected mushroom poisoning, evacuating a 21‑year‑old woman with a dislocated lower‑limb injury, and attempting resuscitation of an unconscious tourist on the Babele‑Peștera trail, who later died despite medical intervention. The same team also continued maintenance and marking of tourist trails in the Leaota mountain area to improve safety.

In the preceding 24‑hour period, the National Salvamont dispatch centre logged 23 emergency calls across several Romanian counties, including Brașov, Cluj, Maramureș and others. Rescue teams saved 26 individuals, with 13 transferred to ambulance services or SMURD for hospital care. An additional 47 calls sought advice on mountain routes. Salvamont officials urged hikers to exercise caution and highlighted their role as the legally authorized mountain rescue service in Romania.
