Romanian mountain roads draw surge of summer tourists

The 20‑kilometre stretch of DN18 through Pasul Gutăi in Maramureș, modernised in the 1960s‑70s, has become a popular summer destination for cyclists and motorcyclists drawn by its tight serpentine curves and forested scenery. The road links Baia Mare and Sighetu Marmației and passes landmarks such as the Biserica lui Vlaicu and the source of Pintea.

The nearby Transfăgărășan (DN7C), recently reopened, continues to attract visitors with its high‑altitude landscape, including Bâlea Lake, the 60‑metre Bâlea waterfall, and occasional sightings of bears that have become a quirky attraction. Both routes showcase Romania’s dramatic mountain terrain and are heavily visited during the summer months.
