Romanian Parliament Approves Support Package for Cattle and Pig Farmers
The lower house of Romania's parliament passed a law package initiated by Agriculture Minister Tánczos Barna to provide direct financial aid to cattle and pig producers. Each eligible farm can receive up to 50,000 EUR (approximately 2.5 million RON) in subsidies, with the total budget capped at 54.4 million EUR for cattle and 11.54 million EUR for pigs. The measures aim to offset higher fertilizer and fuel costs caused by the Middle‑East crisis and to mitigate losses from the African swine fever outbreak.
The legislation also tightens penalties for illegal animal transport and trade, authorises the seizure of transport vehicles, and introduces compensation for farms forced to cull livestock. Veterinary services related to disease control will be paid promptly. A similar support scheme for sheep breeders is slated for parliamentary consideration in the coming week.
