Romanian pensioners protest for higher indexation and basic living support
Pensioners in Romania are staging protests to demand better financial conditions and higher pension indexation. In Olt County, members of the ‘Solidaritatea’ association demonstrated in front of the Prefect's Institution, presenting a list of demands to be forwarded to the Government.
The protesters are calling for the pension reference point to be indexed by at least 15% in 2027, with subsequent annual increases tied to the real rise in prices for basic foods, medicine, and utilities. They are also requesting the payment of the second installment of the solidarity package in December, the urgent resolution of pending pension recalculation files, and an expansion of the list of compensated medications.
Demonstrators reported extreme difficulty meeting basic needs, with some stating they must choose between purchasing food or essential medical treatments. Many seniors noted they have been forced to reduce spending on meat and vegetables or have gone weeks without necessary medication due to insufficient monthly income.
