Romania's PNL names interim county leaders as party reorganises

Senator Mihai Coteț was confirmed as interim president of the National Liberal Party (PNL) in Argeș County. In his first informal meeting he stressed rebuilding the organisation, recruiting young professionals and entrepreneurs, and moving the party forward on a merit‑based platform.

Retired major‑general and university professor Ioan Sîrbu was appointed interim president of PNL Gorj. He has a 30‑day mandate to set up a new county political bureau and pledged to combine experience with fresh energy to serve local communities.

Following the party’s extraordinary congress, a wave of interim appointments was made in other counties, notably Marian Petrache taking the Ilfov leadership, replacing Hubert Thuma, as part of a broader reshuffle of 13 county heads.

The congress itself was presented as a moment of renewal, with PNL leaders claiming the party emerged stronger, more unified and independent of the Social Democratic Party. Commentators highlighted ongoing tensions in the Timiș branch, where internal disputes continue to affect the party’s local cohesion.
