Romania's UDMR chief outlines two minority‑government options after presidential talks
Leader of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), Kelemen Hunor, told President Nicușor Dan that three governing formulas remain on the table. Two are minority‑government options and a third would involve a “very slim” parliamentary majority.
The first option – a PNL‑USR‑UDMR minority cabinet – would rely on transparent support from the Social‑Democrats (PSD), but PSD chairman Sorin Grindeanu has ruled it out. The second option is a single‑party PSD minority government backed in parliament by PNL, UDMR and the ethnic‑minorities group, including the PNL deputies who voted for the previous Veștea cabinet. The third option would essentially revive the former coalition of PSD, PNL, UDMR and the minorities group that governed until June 2025, which Kelemen says would offer greater stability and allow implementation of the 2027 budget.
Kelemen stressed that any scenario must begin with a political agreement among parties before a prime‑minister is nominated and that, with such an agreement, the procedure could be completed by early next week, before the end of June.
