Romanian police's JUPITER operation targets fraud and illegal weapons

The Prosecutor's Office of the High Court of Cassation and the Romanian General Police Inspectorate coordinated a nationwide crackdown called operation JUPITER. Police raids were carried out in dozens of counties, including Brașov, Dâmbovița, Ilfov, Buzău, Prahova, Bucharest, Bistrița‑Năsăud, Botoșani, Constanța, Hunedoara, Gorj, Suceava and others.

The actions seized a 50‑year‑old suspect in Brașov under a European arrest warrant from Greece for counterfeit euro banknotes, confiscated luxury vehicles, cash (hundreds of thousands of lei and euros), weapons, ammunition and arbalets, and uncovered large‑scale tax‑evasion and fraud schemes with estimated losses ranging from 65 000 lei to over 5.4 million lei. Investigations revealed false documents used to sell cars, money‑laundering through companies, and illegal financial transactions linked to Romania and foreign partners, including cooperation with German authorities.

Several suspects were detained for 24‑hour periods pending further judicial review. The operation demonstrates a broad effort to combat organized economic crime and illegal arms possession across Romania.
