Romanian police conduct large‑scale raids against illegal weapons and antisocial activity

On the night of 12‑13 June 2026, police and gendarmerie units carried out a broad raid in the Valea Jiului area of Hunedoara County. The operation aimed to curb antisocial behaviour and improve road safety. Officers checked 11 businesses, verified 491 individuals in databases, inspected 289 vehicles (including six foreign‑registered), performed 97 alcohol and drug tests and issued 69 fines totaling 43,105 lei. Specific incidents included a suspended‑license driver with a blood‑alcohol level of 0.63 mg/L and a rider without a licence, both facing criminal charges.

In a separate investigation dubbed Operation Jupiter, Romanian police in Sălaj and Maramureș counties executed four home searches in June 2026. The raids uncovered two unauthorized sport firearms and a total of 854 rounds of ammunition, which were seized for further investigation. The operations were coordinated by the National Prosecutor’s Office and the General Inspectorate of Police, targeting illegal possession of weapons and ammunition.
