Romania road safety: Police enforcement and traffic incidents
Romanian authorities have reported a significant surge in road safety enforcement and a series of traffic-related incidents across the country. Police operations have resulted in thousands of fines, hundreds of confiscated driver's licenses, and numerous criminal cases involving driving under the influence of alcohol or psychoactive substances.
In Hunedoara, recent checks led to 11 criminal cases and dozens of sanctions. Similarly, in Brașov, police identified multiple drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol. National statistics for the first half of the year show 1,679 road accidents, resulting in 492 deaths and 1,384 serious injuries, with speeding and pedestrian/cyclist errors cited as primary causes.
Specific incidents include a fatal collision on the A1 motorway between Sibiu and Sebeș, a pedestrian fatality in Leordeni, and a Spanish national being detained in Năvodari after hitting a woman on a crosswalk and fleeing. Additionally, traffic restrictions are scheduled for the Transfăgărășan road due to upcoming automotive events and competitions, including the Transfier triathlon.
