Romanian police confiscate more than 58,000 illicit cigarettes in two raids

Police in the Satu Mare county of Romania stopped an 18‑year‑old driver on June 13 and uncovered 13,060 untaxed cigarettes in her vehicle, valued at over 13,000 lei. The seized goods exceeded the legal limit of 10,000 cigarettes, prompting a criminal investigation for illegal possession of untaxed tobacco products.

Separately, border police at Henri Coandă (Otopeni) Airport inspected eight Romanian passengers travelling to or from Istanbul, London and Manchester and found 44,880 cigarettes (2,294 packs) hidden in their checked and hand luggage. The travelers received fines and are being investigated for contraband under the national customs law.
