Romanian police detain 59 in nationwide 'Jupiter' anti‑crime raid

Romanian authorities carried out the five‑day "Jupiter" operation from June 8 to June 12, targeting economic and financial offences, illegal weapons, hazardous materials, environmental violations and crimes committed by public officials. Across 300 ongoing criminal cases, police conducted searches at 1,170 locations and detained a total of 535 people.

Of those, 59 were placed in police custody, 96 were placed under judicial supervision, and eight faced pre‑emptive detention. The operation seized approximately 141 million lei in cash and nearly 14 million lei in assets such as cigarettes, pyrotechnics and musical instruments. Authorities also confiscated 40 lethal and 55 non‑lethal firearms. Specific police divisions conducted hundreds of searches: the economic crime unit carried out 810 raids, while investigations into robbery, fraud, extortion, cybercrime, and illegal weapons possession accounted for dozens of additional sweeps.
