Bușteni flash flood forces evacuations, blocks DN1 and triggers massive rescue effort
Severe thunderstorms on 19‑20 July 2026 caused a flash flood in the mountain resort of Bușteni, Prahova County. Rapidly rising waters from the Jepi stream inundated streets, homes and the main national road DN1, trapping vehicles and isolating a neighbourhood. A 33‑year‑old woman was swept away at the town entrance, rescued by SMURD and taken to hospital with leg fractures. Twelve people in total were rescued, including two elderly passengers from a car caught in the torrent.
The Romanian authorities mobilised extensive resources: the 21st Mountain Hunters battalion from Predeal deployed dozens of soldiers with shovels and pumps, the Prahova fire‑rescue service operated multiple fire engines, ambulances and specialist pumps, and the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) reinforced teams from several counties. Over 20 households were flooded, dozens of trees and utility poles were downed, and traffic on DN1 remained blocked for hours. The same storm system triggered alerts and flooding in 29 localities across 16 counties, prompting RO‑Alert messages and the deployment of over 10 000 emergency personnel nationwide.
The event caused significant material damage, disrupted transport, and required coordinated civil‑military response, but no fatalities were reported.
