Romanian Police face legal dispute over retired officers' rights

The Botoșani Tribunal has ruled in a legal dispute involving two retired police officers, rejecting arguments made by both the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police (IGPR) and the Botoșani County Police Inspectorate (IPJ).

During the proceedings, the IPJ Botoșani argued it was not responsible for the officers, claiming their service relationship was with the IGPR. Conversely, the IGPR argued it could not pay rights for employees of another institution with separate legal personality, specifically citing the Suceava Special Operations Brigade. However, the court noted that official IGPR documents from January 2025 stated that such brigades do not have separate legal personality and function within the IGPR.

The court determined that both institutions hold procedural status in the case, noting that while the service relationship was established with the IGPR, salary payments were managed through the IPJ Botoșani structures. The ruling mandates a recalculation of the officers' rights.
