Romanian police conduct nationwide traffic checks, issuing hundreds of fines and licence seizures

During the nights of 24–26 July 2026, police units in multiple Romanian towns – including Timișoara, Costinești, Constanţa, Medgidia, Blaj, Dăbuleni, Bechet, Sălaj, Câmpeni, Câmpulung la Tisa, Cugir and Piteşti – carried out large‑scale "razie" operations aimed at enforcing traffic rules, preventing drunk‑driving and checking vehicle compliance. The actions legitimised more than 600 people, inspected over 1 200 vehicles and resulted in dozens of contraventional fines totalling roughly 150 000 lei. Permits were seized, vehicles were impounded and several drivers were arrested for excessive speed, alcohol consumption or refusing biological sampling. On 25 July, a national sweep saw 567 driving licences retained, 192 drivers lose licences for speeding, 79 for alcohol‑related offences, and over 10 000 fines issued, amounting to about 4.5 million lei. The raids also targeted commercial premises and rail‑crossing safety. In parallel, the 2026 Road Code clarified that no mandatory minimum speed is imposed on highways; only vehicles incapable of exceeding 50 km/h may be prohibited from using them.
